Kimber Li asked: What inspired your novella, The Shadow Prince?
I wrote The Shadow Prince because I wanted to have something I could give readers for free. That’s the truth. I was a debut author, and I thought readers might give me a chance if they didn’t have to buy a book. At the time, I’d already written Storm Born, which is the first novel in the Mortal Enchantment series. I thought it might be interesting to write the story that laid the foundation for the entire series. That’s why I created the novella. I wrote the entire thing in two weeks, which is crazy looking back on it. I’m typically not a fast writer.
There is one character from my childhood who inspired Rowan. Aragorn’s alter-ego Strider in Lord of the Rings. I read the series as a child, and I credit those books for inspiring my love of fantasy. I was watching the movie version in the theatre, and when he came on screen, I remember wondering what Strider would be like if he were a separate person not associated with Aragorn. After adding a magical element, and some other unique personality traits, you get Rowan. The Shadow Prince is Rowan’s coming of age story told in his point of view.
When it came to Rowan’s actual story, I needed to connect him with the heroine in my series before they met. Their lives had to entwine. Otherwise, you wouldn’t understand why he would want to risk his life for her. I didn’t want the story to be about him being selfless or even a good person. I wanted to establish a real connection. What I ended up doing was expanding the story of his wings. I don’t want to give much detail on that because it gives away the story. What I will say is that what happens to Rowan in The Shadow Prince sets the series plot in motion.
You’ll have to read it if you want to know more. 😊
