Queen Elizabeth II as a toddler, isn’t she adorable? This is a Public Domain image.
Well, goshdarnit, I couldn’t find a very good reason to include a royal nanny in the headline. As far as I know, none of them obtained training online. Nevertheless, here is a lovely article on Royal Nannies. It includes Barbara Barnes, the first nanny for Princes William and Harry. I can tell you it’s a wonderful thing to be a child’s first nanny! A Career Path for an Adult in an Unrelated Field
Okay, so maybe you bought into the dogma that you have to be a doctor, lawyer, or investment banker in order to be a worthwhile, meaningful, and powerful person.
And now you realize that was a load of crap
Congratulations! Now, you’re ready to define yourself and do what you enjoy. How to switch? Even if your education and experience so far has been in an unrelated field, you can still make use of the emotional maturity gained from it. Potential employers will see that you’re hard-working and trustworthy. You may have even acquired a skill which will translate nicely. There are families who are looking for computer experts to tutor their offspring, for example.
Career Paths for Real Nannies of the Sacred Code
This is the third post in a series, plus one for potential employers. I link to the previous ones at the end of this post. Each one considers at what point a potential nanny might enter the profession and the preparation I recommend.
Disclaimer: This is only my opinion! Each of you is a unique individual with a variety of backgrounds and experiences. You need to do your own homework and figure out what’s best for you.
Also, everything about a nanny applies to a manny. Here is an interesting article from the Wellington Agency on The Benefits of the Male Nanny

What is the Sacred Code?
I created this fictional designation based on the real life practice of friends recommending nannies who’d worked for them and nannies letting their friends know when new jobs were opening up. A hundred years ago in England it was common for noble families to pass around nannies as needed. For example, the nanny who raised Lady Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon also nannied that lady’s daughters, the future Queen Elizabeth II and Princess Margaret.
The Code itself is based on three universal human virtues all nannies ought to possess in abundance.
Loyalty, Sincerity, and Compassion
Experience & Necessary Skills
You’ve probably already gained a lot of experience and necessary skills. Try to get Letters of Recommendation and write your resume to explain how those skills translate to being a nanny. It demonstrates you’ve thought a lot about and are committed to your career change. Here is an excellent blog post on nanny resumes- Elizabeth Rose Agency on Nanny Resumes.
Don’t expect a top job right away, no matter how mature and sophisticated you are. It’s going to depend on your present level of experience with children. Working in an office may be challenging, for example, but it’s nothing compared to the heart-wrenching task of caring for screaming baby while rushing to the emergency room. Nannies need nerves of steel and hearts of gold! You may need to be an assistant nanny or on-call sitter for a while. Always keep in mind that excellent references and Letters of Recommendation are essential in snagging the job of your dreams!

Switching Careers by Taking Online Nanny Training
One way to gain confidence and reassure future employers is to take online nanny training. It can be a very basic course or an extensive one, depending on your present experience with children. Working in a private home is likely very different from your present career. There are many special considerations.
Disclaimer: I have no personal experience with these programs! Always read reviews and check with the Better Business Bureau.
Back in the day, schools and agencies were rampant with scammers. I know the situation is much better now, but you can’t be too careful. You’re putting a lot of time and money into becoming the best nanny on the planet. Don’t let some selfish creep ruin it for you. Do your homework!
The Amslee Institute has five program options, depending on your need and career plans. This Florida school has only been around since 2017, but most online training is fairly new. It grew up with the rise of the Internet, after all.
These two are my favorites, but there are others. Do your own research and find the one which works best for you and your career goals.
Think you can ‘test out?’
Pop over to The International Nanny Association for two possibilities.
Or maybe their Nanny Mentor Program is just what you need!
There you have it, the career path of an adult educated and employed in a different field and wanting to make the career swap.
