My present book-in-progress is this genre. It’s a novella and will likely be about 17,000 words upon completion. I have one more pass in the revision stage and then I begin the editing. More on the topic of editing tomorrow.
I love the Old West, from the actual history to the Hollywood version. I did my Film History paper on John Wayne and the movie ‘The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance.’
One of my top most favorite movies of all time is Dances with Wolves.
So, it was only natural Western Romance would be one of the genres on my buffet. Turns out there are two kinds, Historical and Contemporary. The one I am working on right now is Contemporary.
The thing to know about Historical is that marriage was more about survival. Love and happiness were rarely in the mix. When a girl was so blessed, it was truly a wonderful thing.
Laura Ingalls Wilder’s parents certainly loved each other and were happy together. It’s a good bet a lot of readers in this genre started out on the Little House series as kids. I know I did. http://www.lauraingallswilderhome.com/
For me, the appeal of writing a Contemporary Western Romance is throwing together two people from very different lifestyles, Urban and Country, Indoors and Outdoors, Party with Peers and Family. It’s a little bit of ‘fish out of water’ too. I always liked that.
My favorite Western Romance author is Linda Lael Miller. The first novel she hooked me with was The Bridegroom, which I reviewed on my old blog, Enduring Romance. http://enduringromance.blogspot.com/2009/05/bridegroom-by-linda-lael-miller.html
She continues to be awesome and has a huge backlist. http://www.lindalaelmiller.com/
For the truly addicted, I suggest Harlequin’s ‘Western Romance’ imprint. http://www.harlequin.com/store.html?cid=623437
You can also finds lots of cowboys in their Love Inspired Historicals imprint- http://www.harlequin.com/store.html?cid=994
You can also find them dotted through the other imprints, because, goshdarnit, readers are just crazy about ’em. Most other publishers have a good plenty of ’em too, ranging from Sweet to Erotic. Personally, I stick with the Sweet through Sensual. Just sayin’.
